Faculty Focus: Chaitanya Mahajan, College of Engineering

Industrial engineering Assistant Professor Chaitanya Mahajan joined the NMSU faculty in April 2023. His teaching and research interests focus on synthesizing new functional materials, designing print strategies for multi-material deposition techniques, enhancing material properties in 3D printed parts, and examining post-processing techniques to develop novel applications on flexible substrates using various additive manufacturing techniques.

“Interdisciplinary research is my favorite aspect of working at NMSU,” Mahajan said. “It fosters a culture of collaboration and encourages creative thinking among faculty and students.”

Currently, Mahajan is working with the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Department of Animal and Range Sciences, Civil Engineering, and Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.

“My research is in additive manufacturing, focusing on carbon fiber composites and printed electronics,” Mahajan said. “Additive manufacturing with carbon fiber composites can have a transformative impact by producing complex parts that lead to product innovation and customization. Printed electronics hold significant promise to revolutionize supply chains, making them more efficient, which is crucial for the state’s manufacturing sector.”

Mahajan earned his master’s degree and Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering from the Rochester Institute of Technology and bachelor’s degree in production engineering from the University of Mumbai.
