Industrial Engineering at NMSU
What is Industrial Engineering?
Industrial engineers are primarily concerned with the analysis, design, and control of production, service, and distribution systems. They draw upon specialized knowledge and skills in mathematical, physical, and social sciences, together with the principles and methods of engineering analysis and design, to specify, predict, and evaluate the result to be obtained from such systems. Industrial engineering is unique among engineering disciplines in its focus on the human element in systems. Industrial engineers are employed in manufacturing, hospitals, utility companies, retailing, government agencies, research organizations, and consulting firms. Further opportunities in management often develop for industrial engineers. The undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commision of ABET, 111 Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore , MD 21202-4012, Telephone (410) 347-7700. It is the only Industrial Engineering program in New Mexico.

Industrial Engineering Students
- Learn to design a manufacturing process from start to finish, taking into account the location and layout of the factory, the raw materials needed, and transportation of raw materials and finished products.
- Use computers to design new facilities such as banks, hospitals or amusement parks.
- Use computers as they learn to improve workplace productivity.
- Gain highly desirable skills not only in engineering, but in math, science, business and the social sciences.
- Develop excellent oral and written communication skills to help them work in teams with specialists from many disciplines.
