IE Mission Statement, Program Educational Objectives, and Student Outcomes

The objective of the Industrial Engineering Program is to produce graduates who can design, implement and analyze production, service, and distribution systems. These systems are found in manufacturing and service industries, as well as in government and research organizations. Our department goals include producing graduates capable of functioning on multi-disciplinary teams, understanding professional and ethical responsibility, recognizing the value of life-long learning and possessing superb communication skills.

Program Educational Objectives

Within 2-3 years of graduation, graduates of NMSU undergraduate program in industrial engineering will have:

  •          Successfully applied various industrial engineering techniques in an integrated fashion to solve real world problems in process design and/or improvement;
  •          Been engaged in a successful career sustained by life-long learning experiences

Student Outcomes

Graduates on the NMSU Industrial Program will have an:

a) Ability to apply knowledge of math, science, and engineering to practice engineering in general, and specific industrial engineering methods and techniques.

b) Ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to interpret data.

c) An ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.

d) Ability to function on a multidisciplinary team.

e) Ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.

f) Knowledge and Understanding of the professional and ethical responsibilities of an Industrial Engineer.

g) Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.

h) The broad education necessary to understand the impact of Industrial Engineering solutions in a global and societal context.

i) Recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in lifelong learning about innovations and trends in technology, industry and Industrial Engineering practice.

j) Knowledge of contemporary issues in Industrial Engineering.

k) An ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
