A Hybrid DOE/DEA Approach

Two Experiments used in “A hybrid DOE/DEA approach to assess simulated futures in the Afghan educational system (by Benjamin Marlin and Han-Suk Sohn)” submitted for publication.
This research presents an assessment on the simulated futures of the Afghan educational system. We use a hybrid analytical process combining simulation, design of experiments (DOE), and data envelopment analysis (DEA) that is capable of studying the dynamic behaviour of the Afghan educational system. By using the process, we are able to determine the critical relationships, potential futures, and unforeseen consequences of potential policies regarding primary and secondary education in Afghanistan. This research also provides insight into the use of DEA when applied to a large-scale discrete event social simulation.

We provide here some extra information for two experiments conducted in this research as below:

 

Experiment #1

The first experiment that we conducted in this research is a nearly saturated NOLH, which looked across 34 provinces and Kabul, each with different security values, for a total of 41 variables and 47 design points. An example of the results is shown in Tables 1-6, where we list the design points (DP), student and teacher resolves, TTC and CBE capacities, population (Pop), funding amounts, and dropout ratio (DropOuts).

Experiment #2

The second experiment we conducted isolates eight particular provinces in Afghanistan (i.e., Nimroz, Zabul, Badghis, Khost, Paktia, Kandahar, Uruzgan, and Paktika) owing to the published Afghan government security concerns. Simulation experiments consisting of 66 design points were executed for each of the eight provinces, and a portion of the experimental design is included in Table 7. Again, DP represents design point; S and T resolves are, respectively, student and teacher resolves; and ATK rate is the provincial attack rate, that is, security level.
